Interview with Barbara Lefler
The Emotional Impact of having a learning disability
Outside of school, what is the impact of having a learning disability?
In my experience, it is not unusual to find that parents, who may have had their own bad experiences with special education, resist allowing their child to be identified as someone having a learning disability. Is this something you have seen?
How would you respond to parents who are afraid of the emotional impact that special education might have on their children? Is "labeling" an issue for you?
Still, when parents might be looking back on their own difficult experience in school, they worry about the impact on their own children. Do you have some suggestions about what a parent might do to support their children?
